一、What NG eCall actually is

NG eCall is the next-generation in-vehicle emergency call system — the upgrade to the traditional eCall. Earlier in-car emergency calling ran on 2G and 3G circuit-switched voice networks, leaning on obsolete communication standards. The new NG eCall uses mainstream 4G and 5G, switching to packet data channels and dropping the old circuit-voice limitation.

This is not a minor feature tweak; it is a full underlying architecture overhaul covering terminal communication protocols, data transmission logic, and backend integration.   二、Why push next-generation eCall

1. Legacy networks are being retired

From 1 January 2028, the old transitional technical spec is formally withdrawn and the new generation standard is fully unified. One clarification: backup power is a long-standing requirement of traditional eCall, not a new NG eCall clause. The new standard only refines the corresponding test specs and pass/fail criteria.

OEMs and Tier-1 suppliers focused on EU export are the core affected group. Every newly developed export model must complete NG eCall compliance. In-vehicle communication terminals and T-BOX manufacturers need to upgrade hardware and optimize their communication protocol stacks to meet the new standard.

Communication module makers must iterate too. Modules that cannot support the new communication architecture will not enter the EU new-vehicle supply chain. Upgrade early to protect overseas supply contracts and orders.

The core in-vehicle standards and interface specs for NG eCall are finalized and published. The technical system is stable and fully supports R&D, prototype testing, and certification filing — no need to keep waiting. Only a small number of cross-device interoperability supplementary rules are still being fine-tuned.

Companies just need to keep tracking official updates and ensure their protocols, interfaces, and functions fully match the new spec. This compliance is a mandatory item in EU whole-vehicle type approval — no export new vehicle can avoid it. Plan ahead.
