Which Products Need DAB+ Certification? A Full Breakdown

Doing digital-broadcast exports, the question we hear most is the obvious one: does my product actually need DAB+ certification? On the surface it is simple — if it receives or transmits DAB+, it needs it. But when you actually inventory a product line, the boundaries are fuzzier than they look. Does a head unit count? Does the car radio module inside it count? This piece sorts it by type.

1. First, separate the two systems

1.1 Mandatory government type approval

Each country has statutory radio-equipment access. The EU uses CE-RED, the UK uses the UKCA mark, Australia uses RCM, and the Middle East has its own interpretations. Fail this gate and customs blocks you. To be precise: a DAB+ receiver sits inside RED, certified against the ETSI EN 303 345 series (the DAB/DAB+ receiver sub-part is EN 303 345-4). If it also integrates Wi-Fi or Bluetooth transmission, that still falls under RED — just with added transmitter test items. A pure receiver has no mandatory spectrum-interface requirements, but the CE mark and declaration of conformity hang under RED, not a separate LVD-plus-EMC pair.

1.2 WorldDAB is voluntary

WorldDAB is the global digital-broadcast forum that promotes the DAB standard and sets interoperability specifications. It does not issue certificates; it runs model registration and trademark licensing. Once a device passes testing at an approved laboratory and the model enters the official database, it can lawfully use the DAB/DAB+ mark. It is not legally mandatory, but UK brick-and-mortar auto-parts retailers require the Tick Mark, which is close to a market-access threshold. The licence is time-limited and renewed roughly every three years — not permanent.

1.3 Do not run the two systems as one

The technical standard (ETSI) is unified, but the process is run separately per country. If you are doing both the EU and UK markets, do not expect one report to cover both. UK CE-RED certificates still work through the transition period; it is not a 2026 hard cutover to UKCA across the board — new designs are the ones that should schedule UKCA early.

  2. Automotive is the biggest slice

2.1 Factory-fitted head units

Factory-fitted in-vehicle infotainment hosts, centre-console screens and integrated navigation units all fall in scope the moment they integrate DAB+ reception. Beyond the DAB+ RF and audio-decoding certification, the carmaker or channel often additionally demands automotive-environment reliability testing: high-low temperature cycling, vibration, wide-voltage adaptation, and sometimes real-vehicle road tests. Be clear: environmental reliability is an OEM automotive-grade threshold, not a statutory DAB+ certification item — do not conflate the two.

2.2 Aftermarket and retrofit

Aftermarket head units and standalone in-car radio boxes also need certification; do not assume "not factory-fitted" means nobody is watching. When Thailand rolled out DAB+, aftermarket and new factory-fitted vehicles landed on two separate nodes.

2.3 In-car radio modules

A standalone supplied in-car DAB+ receiver module has its own model number and declaration boundary, covered separately below.

  3. Home and portable categories

3.1 Tabletop and portable radios

Tabletop digital radios and portable DAB+ radios ship in large volumes. RF performance and HE-AAC v2 decoding are mandatory tests; screen-equipped units also verify the DLS dynamic label.

3.2 Smart speakers and network audio

Smart speakers and desktop network audio that integrate DAB+ also need coexistence-and-interference testing between Wi-Fi, Bluetooth and DAB+ reception; voice-assistant models must not miss the wake-word and audio-switching interference scenarios.

3.3 Wearables

Wearables with DAB+ reception have entered the certification conversation in the last couple of years — confirm the current interpretation with the accepting lab upfront rather than scheduling against an old list.

  4. Professional and transmitter categories

4.1 Transmitters and repeaters

Broadcast transmitters, repeater stations and signal-forwarding equipment are on the transmitting end, with standards different from the receiving end. The transmitter side looks at frequency stability, power control, linearity and long-term stability — a different metric system from receivers, and quotes and lead times differ widely.

4.2 Signal-processing equipment

Encoders, multiplexers and the like are verified for DLS data-transmission stability and protocol compatibility.

4.3 Modules and chips

DAB+ receiver modules and integrated SoCs: a finished product that has passed pre-certification can skip some tests, but the boundary must be defined clearly upfront or you waste money.

  5. Boundaries and exemptions

5.1 Clearly out of scope

Traditional radios with only AM/FM and no digital reception do not need it. Pure Bluetooth speakers, pure wired audio, and anything without digital-broadcast functionality are out of scope. Industrial audio equipment not aimed at consumers and not connected to a public broadcast network is also exempt.

5.2 Three easy mistakes

(1) A unit with both FM and DAB+: do not assume FM lets you skip it — if it has DAB+ reception, it goes through DAB+. 

(2) The reverse: an audio device with only Bluetooth and Wi-Fi and no DAB+ does not need DAB+ certification. 

(3) The module-versus-finished-product declaration boundary is the easiest to misjudge.

② A module used only for internal integration and not circulated separately is covered by the finished product's certificate — no duplicate submission.
