CarPlay certification ultimately runs through Apple's MFi program, but document preparation for the vehicle head unit side is far more involved than for ordinary MFi accessories. There are vehicle-scenario-specific documentation requirements. Miss one item and you're looking at another round of rejection and resubmission — each cycle adds two to four weeks. This article walks through the entire document checklist, organized into four categories: company qualifications, product technical, testing, and compliance — with common pitfalls called out for each.
One thing to clarify upfront: Apple MFi has never issued a new rule mandating that new head units must support wireless CarPlay. Wired CarPlay can still go through iAP2 certification normally. In recent years, OEM procurement has leaned toward wireless versions — that's a commercial preference, not a certification threshold. Wired and wireless each prepare their own test documents. They don't cross over.
1. MFi membership is the first gate. You need a valid MFi Manufacturing License. If it's expired, renew first before anything else. The base membership fee is a flat $99 USD per year — whether you make consumer electronics or automotive products, the fee doesn't change. Vehicle projects cost more downstream because testing and factory audits require more labor hours, not because the membership fee is higher.
2. Business license English translation. Chinese companies need to translate and notarize their Chinese business license. The translation must strictly match the original, and the business scope must cover automotive electronics or consumer electronics manufacturing.
3. Factory audit report. If production is outsourced, you need to provide the contract manufacturer's MFi factory audit pass certificate. Apple's MFi factory audit checks ESD protection, material traceability, finished product inspection, and iAP2 chip ledger — it's not checking automotive quality management systems. IATF 16949 is an OEM supplier access requirement. Apple auditors don't look at this certificate. Having it or not doesn't affect audit speed. Many factories get this confused and waste time preparing the wrong documents.
4. Authorized signatory information. Apple requires the legal authorized signatory and daily project contact to be separate individuals. There's no mandate that design, compliance, and business roles must be three different people. The authorization letter uses Apple's designated template, signed and stamped with the company seal.
II. CarPlay Certification Product Technical Documents
1.Product specification document is the evaluation starting point. CPU model, OS version, memory capacity, screen resolution and refresh rate, supported connection methods — all must be clearly documented. For wireless CarPlay products, the Wi-Fi chip and Bluetooth chip must include the original manufacturer's part number, not just the module model number.
2.Circuit schematics and PCB layout. Apple's review engineers check the data channel between the iAP2 coprocessor and main controller, USB-C interface CC logic, and wireless module antenna layout. Isolation is judged holistically based on overall EMI and same-board Wi-Fi/Bluetooth mutual interference — Apple doesn't specify a fixed dB number as a red line in documentation. For PCB layout, Apple focuses on power integrity. Excessive supply ripple to the iAP2 chip results in direct design disqualification.
3.BOM list. Critical components around the iAP2 must have complete part numbers and specs, including LNA, crystal oscillator, and power ICs. Standard SMT resistors and capacitors just need component part numbers — you don't need to list precision grades for all of them. For components deviating from Apple's recommended list, note the substitution rationale in the BOM remarks with supporting test data.
4.Software architecture documentation. iAP2 protocol stack implementation, CarPlay session establishment flow, audio/video data transmission paths, HMI interaction logic — all must be diagrammed. Apple pays the most attention to connection failure retry mechanisms and exception handling. Vague documentation here triggers focused questioning. Facets-3 scripts distinguish between transient disconnections and deep link breaks. Reconnection timeouts are tiered by scenario — not a single fixed number of seconds across the board.
5.UI/UX design assets. Home screen layout, app icon arrangement, CarPlay entry point location, connection status visual feedback — all need screenshots with annotations. Apple's HMI guidelines have specific requirements for font size, minimum touch target size, and button color contrast. Non-compliant designs get returned directly.
III. CarPlay Certification Testing-Related Documents
Third-party lab test reports are what get formally submitted. Facets-3 has an internal self-test version and an Apple backend formal version. Data from the self-test version is for internal reference only — it cannot substitute for formal test reports. The formal version must be run at an Apple-approved third-party lab. All passing case records count only from the formal version.
Wireless performance test reports include Wi-Fi 2.4GHz and 5GHz throughput, latency, packet loss rate, plus Bluetooth discovery speed and connection success rate. Audio test reports must include A2B digital audio channel latency and jitter — but only if the product uses an A2B bus solution. Products that don't use A2B don't need this report. During Apple's review, in addition to checking the module's FCC and CE-RED certificates, they also verify the complete device EMI test results. Submitting only module certificates isn't enough.
Wireless charging interference testing only applies to devices with built-in wireless charging modules that also have wireless CarPlay. If the head unit doesn't have wireless charging, skip this item entirely.
Compatibility test matrix: List tested iPhone models, iOS versions, and connection methods. Must cover at least the latest three flagship generations. Wired and wireless results are recorded separately.
IV. CarPlay Certification Compliance Declaration Documents
1.FCC and CE-RED RF compliance proof. The head unit's Wi-Fi and Bluetooth modules must have RF certification certificates for the corresponding regions. If the module already has certificates, the complete device can reuse the module report — but Apple also requires device-level EMI test results.
2.Apple MFi chip procurement records. iAP2 authentication chips must be purchased from Apple-designated authorized distributors. Provide purchase orders and chip serial number traceability records. Non-authorized channels are rejected outright.
3.CarPlay trademark usage commitment letter. Declare that the trademark is used only for certified product promotion and packaging. Product packaging and user manual drafts must also be submitted. Apple reviews CarPlay logo placement, size, and wording on packaging, plus the connection step instructions in the user manual.
OEM vehicle manufacturers go through Apple's dedicated CarPlay Entitlement channel. Tier-1 suppliers and aftermarket manufacturers go through the MFi-iAP2 accessory channel. The document checklists and review focuses differ between the two paths. Figure out which route applies to you before submission.
