Product category determines certification pathway, which further defines required test items and project lead time. Based on the 2026 updated WFA Core Test Plan, this chapter breaks down mandatory items, applicable pathways and common compliance pitfalls across seven mainstream product categories.
1.1 IoT Sensors & Wearable Devices
Applicable products: temperature sensors, door contact sensors, smart switches, wearable electronics. Mostly low-power battery-powered hardware adopting 2.4GHz Wi-Fi 4 (Wi-Fi CERTIFIED n).Under the 2026 Core Test Plan, newly developed Wi-Fi 4 products sold to European & American supermarkets and cross-border e-commerce platforms are forced to complete WPA3-Personal coexistence testing; only Southeast Asia domestic sales support WPA2-only certification. Mains-powered plug-in switches / sockets without batteries are exempted from WMM Power Save testing, while pure battery-operated models must complete this item. 2.4GHz Wi-Fi 6 battery sensors without public Wi-Fi access can skip Enhanced Open testing; products supporting public hotspots need full WPA3 suites.QuickTrack is the primary pathway; FlexTrack is only required when RF matching capacitors / inductors are replaced across brands, or antenna matching / shielding cans are modified. Standard lead time: 3–4 weeks.
1.2 Smart Home Gateways & Central Controllers
Applicable products: smart speakers, Zigbee + Wi-Fi dual-mode Hubs, air conditioner control panels, mainly Wi-Fi 5 / Wi-Fi 6 hardware. Wi-Fi 5 devices adopt WPA2, Wi-Fi 6 devices require WPA3-Personal + PMF. Hotel & campus AC gateways and commercial POS access APs are mandatory for WPA3-Enterprise, while small retail single commercial routers qualify for exemptions.Mesh gateways include built-in mandatory Core test cases for multi-AP RF coexistence & cross-AP roaming; enterprises cannot rely solely on the Wi-Fi Optimized Connectivity value-added item and skip Core testing, which will cause mandatory rework. QuickTrack eligibility remains valid only when matching capacitors or RF traces are unchanged; replacing original factory external antennas with identical matching circuits does not invalidate QuickTrack. Standard lead time: 4–6 weeks.
1.3 Routers / Access Points / CPE Terminals
Wi-Fi 6 routers: mandatory WPA3-Personal; Wi-Fi 6E hardware with additional 6GHz band: full WPA3 suites with zero exemptions; Wi-Fi 7 devices add MLO interoperability & 320MHz bandwidth testing. Entry-level single-band Wi-Fi 7 home routers do not require Agile Multiband certification, which is only recommended for tri-band flagship models. Mesh routers need supplementary Wi-Fi Optimized Connectivity; operator CPE terminals add Wi-Fi Data Elements testing. Lead time: 6 weeks for entry-level models, 10–12 weeks for Wi-Fi 7 Mesh flagship products.
1.4 Automotive Electronic Products
Applicable products: T-Box, vehicle infotainment modules, rear-seat display screens, onboard Wi-Fi hotspots. Wi-Fi 6 T-Boxes mandate WPA3-Enterprise; OEM factory-installed Wi-Fi 7 T-Boxes require Agile Multiband; casting-enabled hardware needs Miracast certification. Temperature cycling test standards: passenger vehicles -40℃ ~ 85℃, commercial vehicles -40℃ ~ 105℃, rear-seat displays only -20℃ ~ 70℃ without wide-temperature range requirements.QuickTrack is still accessible for products retaining 100% original RF reference designs (unmodified antenna matching, PCB RF traces, shielding cans & crystal oscillators). Most automotive Tier 1 suppliers adopt FlexTrack due to customized RF design. The 2-year certificate validity requirement only applies to OEM first-tier vehicle suppliers, with no restrictions for aftermarket accessories. Standard lead time: 8–12 weeks.
1.5 Smart Phones & Tablets
Full frequency band coverage with zero WPA3 suite exemptions; mandatory Passpoint roaming certification, complete Wi-Fi Direct + Miracast testing. QuickTrack can reuse pre-certified chip RF test data with a lead time of 6–8 weeks. Custom built-in antennas or revised RF shielding will immediately disqualify QuickTrack and require full FlexTrack testing.
2. Independent Compliance Rules for Standalone Wi-Fi Modules
For end products integrating purchased certified modules: module certificates only cover Core interoperability and RF performance. After whole-machine QuickTrack filing, four test items including WMM, roaming, RF coexistence and security still need retesting; multi-device concurrent connection, multi-band RF coexistence and whole-machine temperature rise tests are compulsory.Modules sold independently to third-party customers (regardless of retail sales channels) must complete dedicated Module Track certification. Only modules fully self-produced for internal integration without external sales can adopt whole-machine QuickTrack / FlexTrack pathways.
