USB certification is usually something clients chase us to look into only when pressured. The threads are many: first the vendor number, then registration, then lab selection, then document review. Until the VID is sorted, everything behind it stalls. Following the official compliance programme, here is the walk from membership to listing.
1.1 The spec sets the goal, the compliance programme sets the ruler
The USB specification defines design goals at the interface and mechanism level. Whether a real product meets them is defined by the USB-IF compliance programme through test specifications and the TID.
1.2 TID and the Integrators List
After the product passes testing at an authorised laboratory and clears official review, it receives a TID number and is listed on the official Integrators List. Partners verify against this number.
1.3 Certification and mark use are different things
(1) Getting the TID and entering the Integrators List does not by itself let you print the USB mark. (2) The precondition for using the mark is signing a valid Trademark License Agreement (TLA) filed with the official body after listing. ① A member's mark-use right takes effect automatically with membership, no separate signing; a non-member must sign a TLA separately. Printing the mark without the use right is an infringement risk.
2. Step one: membership and the VID
2.1 The VID is the vendor identity number
The VID is the vendor identifier filled into all certification materials; without it the product registration cannot be submitted.
2.2 Two ways to obtain a VID
(1) Join as a member for a fixed 5,000 USD annual fee. USB-IF has only two formal member classes, Adopter and Contributor; an ordinary company takes Adopter, the first VID is free, and mark-use right takes effect with membership. (2) Without joining, pay 6,000 USD once for a VID plus 3,500 USD for a two-year trademark licence (TLA), totalling 9,500 USD. ① For multiple products done long-term, membership pays off; for a single quick product, take the second route. Amounts follow the official current fee schedule.
2.3 When to start
Account and VID review usually takes one to two weeks. Do not wait until just before testing; lock it in the first week of the project.
3. Step two: register the product, choose the lab
3.1 Register first, then choose the lab
(1) Register product information in the official system and classify by category; the system uses this to judge what to test. (2) Only after the registration is complete can you select an authorised independent laboratory (ITL) capable of testing this product type. ① Once selected, the system sends a confirmation email to the vendor, the lab and the administrator.
3.2 What the five paths each cover
(1) Official compliance workshops, members only, held quarterly with on-site testing. The next is the 141st, in Portland, 4–7 August 2026. (2) Authorised independent laboratories cover the widest range of categories and are the main route for non-members. ① Similarity certification suits revised products; the platform interoperability lab targets high-speed products like USB4; the OEM route fits branded products reusing an already-certified model.
3.3 Whether connectors need pre-certification depends on type
(1) For high-speed products like USB4, connectors and cables usually must use certified, TID-bearing components; choosing uncertified parts stalls whole-product testing. (2) Basic USB 2.0 devices are not as strict on connector pre-certification — do not apply it as a hard rule across the board; judge by the actual specification.
4. Step three: testing, review, listing
4.1 Testing splits into three blocks
(1) Electrical performance looks at signal quality and voltage stability; protocol conformance verifies USB4 and PD implementation; interoperability tests stable cooperation across brands and systems.
4.2 Cycle depends on category
(1) Cables and connectors are fastest, results in a few weeks. (2) Hosts, docks and the like usually take eight to twelve weeks including review. ① High-speed, high-power products add two to three weeks over the basic versions.
4.3 The document-review gate
(1) Lab data goes to the official CRB review, usually one to two weeks. A missing required mark on the label gets bounced for a fix of at least a week. (2) Only after review passes is the TID issued and the listing published; mark-use right follows the rules above — automatic for members, by TLA for non-members.
5. Ways to save time and money
5.1 Prefer certified components
Chips, sockets and cables should mostly use models already on the list, which can waive some device-level tests, cutting both cost and cycle.
5.2 Do not skip pre-testing
Before formal submission, have the authorised lab run a pre-assessment; one round raises the pass rate substantially. Rectification re-test commonly runs 50% to 70% of the first round and costs more than pre-testing.
5.3 Watch the new-spec transition window
The official sets a transition window for new specification versions; whether the version your product is based on falls inside the window decides which test requirements apply. Confirm before planning.
