The name “HiPlay” is quite misleading.
Huawei’s ecosystem actually has two systems called HiPlay – one embedded in HiCar (audio/video channel for in‑vehicle projection), and another standalone wireless audio casting protocol released in late 2025 (for speakers). Before discussing certification, you must separate these two – choosing the wrong one wastes all effort.
1.1 In‑Vehicle Projection – No Standalone HiPlay Certification
HiCar is Huawei’s in‑vehicle smart‑connectivity platform. Phone‑to‑head‑unit projection runs through the audio/video path inside the HiCar suite. This projection capability is not a standalone certification – it sits under HiCar whole‑vehicle acceptance testing. There is no route to get a separate “HiPlay certificate” for projection.
Some third‑party agencies suggest bypassing full HiCar and just doing HiPlay for Huawei phone projection – that path does not work. For in‑vehicle projection, the only compliant route is full HiCar acceptance – no exceptions.
1.2 Standalone HiPlay – For Home Audio
The standalone HUAWEI HiPlay (released late 2025) targets home audio devices – speakers, streaming players. Its specification is written for audio scenarios – even the “110‑cycle connection reliability” metric was defined for speakers. It has nothing to do with in‑vehicle projection.
Many agencies conflate the two names. In‑car HiCar projection and living‑room HiPlay casting share the same name but are completely separate certification systems – different test standards, different applicable products. Choosing the wrong path means your device simply won’t be recognised by Huawei phones.
2. HiPlay Certification Paths
2.1 In‑Vehicle Devices – Only One Path
Aftermarket head units or front‑load vehicles wanting Huawei phone projection must go through full HiCar acceptance. Complete HiCar certification covers projection channels, voice assistant, and ecosystem service apps – projection is a sub‑test, not a standalone item.
Front‑load also involves CAN bus interaction, multi‑vehicle‑platform adaptation, and vehicle‑level EMC – these are HiCar whole‑vehicle acceptance items, not HiPlay special tests.
2.2 Home Audio HiPlay Path
Speaker‑type audio devices follow the HUAWEI HiPlay specification issued in late 2025. Tests focus on Wi‑Fi and Bluetooth audio transport – including 110‑cycle connection reliability, both static and dynamic environments. This path does not touch automotive scenarios. Misclassifying your product means wasted effort.
3. HiCar Certification Costs
3.1 Test Fees
HiCar certification testing has two stages: third‑party authorised lab pre‑testing first, then Huawei final review.
Pre‑test fees vary widely – by product type and scope. Front‑load is significantly more expensive than aftermarket. Aftermarket head unit pre‑test industry pricing ranges from several tens of thousands RMB upward.
Key: quotes differ substantially between labs – don’t fix a single number. Get at least two quotes and compare the test‑item lists.
3.2 Huawei Final Review Fee
Huawei charges for final review of pre‑tested products. There is no publicly published uniform HiCar membership annual fee. OEMs negotiate through strategic‑agreement routes; aftermarket component suppliers do not have a separate “ecosystem access fee”.
The “tens‑of‑thousands access service fee” quoted by third parties is mostly their own bundled service markup – not a Huawei regulatory fee. Most quotes mix Huawei’s review fee and third‑party service fees together – hard to separate. Relying on a single quote likely means overpaying.
3.3 Remediation Costs
Remediation during pre‑testing is routine. Many lab package quotes include one or two rounds of remediation labour. If not cleared in the first round, costs depend on the lab’s pricing and the depth of rework.
UI interaction tweaks – short cycles. Changes to the underlying connection stack – cycles stretch significantly. The number of rounds cannot be predetermined.
4. Cost Differences by Product Type
4.1 Aftermarket Wired Solution
Aftermarket wired HiCar costs relatively less – USB wired connection, tests focus on projection quality, UI response, and A/V sync – no Wi‑Fi/Bluetooth stability validation. Total test man‑hours are lower.
4.2 Aftermarket Wireless Solution
Wireless adds Wi‑Fi and Bluetooth connection‑stability tests – costs significantly higher. Wireless projection has strict quality requirements – Huawei acceptance has low tolerance for disconnections and weak‑signal scenarios. Remediation probability is higher – factor this in.
4.3 Front‑Load Whole‑Vehicle HiCar
Front‑load is the most expensive – multi‑vehicle adaptation, vehicle‑level EMC, CAN‑bus interaction – each is a significant cost. However, most tests can be done on bench rigs – not every project requires shipping a complete vehicle to the lab. Logistics costs depend on equipment and lab distance – highly variable.
