Most manufacturers focus on two core points before launching USB-IF certification: required submission documents and valid service lifespan after certification investment. Clarifying these two items helps enterprises control project scheduling and certification budget effectively. This article elaborates full document checklist and validity rules for all types of USB certification credentials.
1.1 Technical Documentation
·Product Specification: The priority submission file, including product classification, supported USB specification revision, interface quantity and power supply capability. Vague descriptions like "supports USB-C" are unacceptable; applicants must specify USB 3.2 / USB4 version and PD rated power for laboratory test item arrangement.
·Schematic & PCB Layout: USB-IF auditors verify circuit compliance focusing on power routing and signal integrity. Blurry screenshot submissions without complete layout details will get direct rejection during document review.
·BOM List: List all core critical components clearly:USB connector model & manufacturer, PD controller IC, E-Marker IC (mandatory for USB cables). Prioritize components listed on USB-IF Integrators List to eliminate standalone component certification.Custom or non-listed uncertified IC needs independent component-level USB-IF certification to be added into Integrators List before final product certification, which adds several weeks of pre-cert lead time.
1.2 VIF File (Core Engineering Document)
VIF (Vendor Info File) is standardized XML file storing full USB capability parameters. For PD chargers, users need to fill PD revision, SPR/EPR range, max voltage/current and PPS specs; host devices require detailed interface type & data rate; cables specify E-Marker configuration, max speed and power rating.Incorrect VIF compilation is the top cause of application rejection. After PD3.2 V1.1 release, AVS adaptive voltage and Shared Capacity shared power parameters must be defined in updated VIF template. 1.3 Test Samples
Prepare minimum 2 sets of mass-production-ready samples; engineering prototypes are forbidden due to unstable electrical test data. Optimized suggestion: prepare 3 units: one for formal certification test, one for supplementary retest upon failure, one for lab interoperability retention test. Pre-install dedicated test firmware with built-in Test Mode trigger command, especially for embedded host products like car head units and smart TVs without PC-style driver installation access.
1.4 Regulatory & Agreement Documents
USB-IF membership certificate & trademark license agreement (signed during VID application). For OEM rebranding products using existing certified mainboard solution, submit OEM Arrangement form with original manufacturer’s signature to add applicant’s company name into certification registry.
2. VID & TID Validity Rules
2.1 VID Validity
Vendor ID (VID) is permanently owned by the registrant, even after USB-IF membership cancellation; USB-IF will never recycle assigned VID no matter annual membership fee is suspended.
2.2 TID Validity
Test ID (TID) has no fixed expiry date and is bound to fixed hardware design. TID keeps valid continuously if PCB layout, core IC, power architecture and E-Marker chip remain unchanged; any critical hardware modification affecting USB performance invalidates original TID and requires recertification. Different from auto standards like GB 44495 tied to vehicle announcement lifecycle, USB TID acts as fixed design snapshot valid for full production & sales cycle of unchanged product.
2.3 USB Trademark License Term
Valid TID does not equal lifelong free Certified USB logo usage right. Annual active USB-IF membership grants perpetual logo authorization; non-member purchases two-year trademark license costing USD 3,500 for logo printing permission. Enterprises canceling membership retain owned VID & TID but lose official logo authorization; rejoin USB-IF or renew non-member license to resume logo marking.
2.4 USB-IF Membership Term
Standard annual membership fee is USD 5,000 for medium & large enterprises; discounted tiered pricing is available for startup & micro-sized businesses. Membership validity counts 12 months from payment date instead of calendar year (e.g. membership activated on Jun 1, 2026 expires on May 31, 2027).
3. QPRDv4 180-Day Flexible Modification Window
QPRDv4 policy allows cosmetic & auxiliary material revision within 180 days post successful certification without retest and original TID inheritance, only limited to housing color, outer package and non-electrical accessories. PCB modification, core chip replacement or power circuit adjustment is out of exemption scope and requires full recertification.
4. Post-Cert TID Information Maintenance
Applicants can submit official application via original registered account to update company name or product model info without retest under unchanged hardware design. In case of enterprise acquisition & brand transfer, complete OEM Arrangement paperwork with original company authorized signature to finish TID ownership transfer.
