USB Compliance Certification Standards & Test Items from USB2.0 to USB4

2026-06-05

Wrong standard selection causes wasted certification cost & lead time; confirm applicable specification per product hardware feature before lab testing. USB-IF certification system is tiered into four core standards: USB2.0, USB3.2, USB4 and USB PD, based on unified Type-C physical layer specification.

1. Core Standard Classification & Corresponding Test Items

1.1 USB2.0 (Mandatory Bottom-layer Test for All USB Devices)

All USB3.2/USB4 products need to pass base USB2.0 certification covering eye diagram signal integrity, voltage threshold, inrush current and packet protocol test; most non-compliance failures root from excessive startup inrush current out of regulated limit.

1.2 USB3.2 Split into Gen1(5Gbps)/Gen2(10Gbps)/Gen2x2(20Gbps)

Corresponding rate tier must complete matched test including transmitter equalization, receiver jitter tolerance, de-emphasis high-frequency electrical parameter and Link Layer protocol verification; BC1.2 charging test is compulsory for charging-enabled USB3.2 interface. Full interoperability validation with official USB Gold Tree reference equipment is required.

1.3 USB4 (Most Complex Certification System, V1=40Gbps / V2=80Gbps)

USB4 certification precondition: fully compliant with USB2.0, USB3.2, USB PD and Type-C specs; test modules include Tx/Rx electrical performance, Link Layer compatibility, DP/PCIe tunnel protocol and full cross-device interoperability. Formal USB4 certification mainly proceeds via PIL lab instead of quarterly Compliance Workshop.

  2. USB PD 3.2 V1.1 Latest Charging Specification (Released Oct 2024)

Three core newly added mandatory test modules:

·AVS adaptive voltage supply: 100mV step adjustable output 9~20V, compulsory for product over 27W rated power

·Shared Capacity dynamic power allocation: mandatory multi-port charger test if product labels shared power function

·EPR Extended Power Range (100~240W): 28V/36V/48V high-voltage test, requires E-Marker equipped high-current rated cable

·FRS Fast Role Swap: strict timing limitation for Initial Sink becomes mandatory certification item; Initial Source FRS only for reference test without formal certification requirement.

  3. Universal Cross-spec Type-C 2.4 Spec (Released Oct2024)Covers CC pin configuration, VCONN power supply, SBU switching and plug reversible compatibility test, prerequisite of full USB4 certification.

·D3 deep power consumption test: mandatory only for USB3.2/USB4 host equipment effective Sep1,2025; charger, cable and peripheral exempt from this item.

·Active E-Marker cable needs mechanical 10,000-cycle durability + high-low temp humidity aging test; passive short low-speed cable obtains partial certification exemption while long-distance high-rate passive USB3.2/USB4 cable still requires formal certification.

  4. Targeted Test Combination by Product Category

·PD Charger: PD Source + Type-C functional test (exclude USB data rate test)

·Pure USB3.2 Data Cable: USB3.2 electrical+protocol+interoperability test without full PD certification

·USB4+EPR multi-function device: full set of USB2.0/3.2/USB4/PD/EPR all mandatory test items with highest certification cost & longest cycle.
