USB‑IF certification costs have been debated for years. Some say a few thousand RMB; others say 200,000 RMB and still not done. The differences come from product type and whether you are a member. This article breaks down each cost component – what is official, and what is agent markup.

1. Membership and Entry Barriers

1.1 You Can Certify Without Being a Member

·Member route: Contributor USD 5,000/year – free VID, automatic trademark licence. Board USD 25,000–50,000 – voting rights.

·Non‑member route: you can certify without membership – the only prerequisite is that you have a VID. Non‑members pay a one‑time USD 6,000 for a VID, then submit TID applications themselves – no need to “piggyback” on a service provider.
The rumour that “free Adopter registration = TID application eligibility” is wrong – the prerequisite is holding a VID.
Membership tier does not affect ITL test quotes – test fees and membership fees are independent. Workshops offer free test slots for members – non‑members cannot attend.

1.2 Trademark Licence – A Separate Item

Getting a TID does not automatically give you logo‑printing rights – both conditions must be met: product listed in the Integrators List and a valid trademark licence. Members automatically have it; non‑members must sign a TLA (Trademark Licence Agreement) – USD 3,500 for 2 years. Many companies only realise they cannot print the logo after passing tests – and are blocked at shipping.

  2. TID Cost Components

2.1 No USD 750 “Platform Fee”

The often‑quoted USD 750 platform fee is not charged by USB‑IF – it is agency service fee. The real costs are:

·ITL lab test fee

·Derivative TID assessment fee
There is no per‑model application fee at the association level – don’t treat it as official budget.

2.2 Full TID vs. Derivative TID

·Full TID – new product, complete certification.

·Derivative TID – based on an existing TID.

Derivative conditions: the physical layer, protocol controller, RF path, and PD hardware must not change. Enclosure colour change → derivative. Firmware tweaks that do not change protocol behaviour may also qualify – but not rigidly.
If you change the main controller or alter the signal path – don’t bother – go Full TID.

2.3 No Standalone “PD‑TID”

USB‑IF has no independent PD‑TID certification category – this is a major industry misunderstanding.
USB PD testing is part of the Full TID package for the whole product – chargers and power supplies go through Full TID – they do not get a separate PD‑only TID. Cables and E‑Markers have their own certification path – but it is not called PD‑TID. This is an industry‑coined term – following it wastes effort.

  3. Lab Test Fee Breakdown

3.1 USB4 – Most Expensive

USB4 has the most test items and the highest cost – FRL signal integrity, eye diagrams, channel attenuation/return. Lab fee: USD 10,000–25,000.

·USB 3.2 Gen2: ~60% of USB4 – USD 5,000–15,000.

·USB 2.0: simplest – USD 1,000–3,000.

3.2 USB PD Testing

PD tests: protocol handshake, power negotiation, voltage transitions, over‑current/over‑voltage protection. Fee: USD 3,000–8,000 – depending on power tier. PD3.1 is more expensive than PD3.0 – 240 W requires specialised load equipment. The difference is driven by power tier and new features (AVS, DPR) – 30‑50% is a rough range. Cables and E‑Markers have separate paths.

3.3 Type‑C Testing and Data Reuse

Type‑C: electrical characteristics, mechanical dimensions, Vconn, CC configuration. Fee: USD 2,000–5,000.
Data reuse is strict – only if the same hardware platform with the same connector solution. Changing connectors – retest. Changing even one CC or Vconn circuit – retest.

  4. Interoperability Testing

4.1 Interop Is Included – Not a Separate Line Item

In a full compliance certification, interoperability tests are built into the test package – legitimate ITLs do not list them separately. If you see a separate interop line item – the agent is splitting fees. Interop failures mean no TID.

4.2 Pre‑Testing vs. Official Interop

Lab pre‑testing (for debugging) is not the same as official interoperability. Pre‑testing is done before formal submission to identify compatibility issues – fees are not standardised. Good pre‑testing significantly improves official interop pass rates.

4.3 PlugFest – Free for Members

Compliance Workshops (PlugFest) are completely free for members – only travel/logistics costs. Claims of “USD 2,000‑5,000 per participant” confuse agency events with official PlugFests.

  5. Domestic vs. Overseas Labs and Scheduling

5.1 Domestic Labs – Lower Rates

Domestic ATL rates are 30‑50% lower than overseas. The same USB4 project – domestic: RMB 70,000‑120,000; overseas: USD 15,000‑25,000. Domestic ATL reports are globally equivalent. Sending overseas adds logistics/travel – one round: RMB 10,000‑30,000.

5.2 Scheduling and Expedite

Scheduling varies with backlog – don’t assume overseas is faster; top domestic ATLs now have comparable lead times. “Expedite” is not an official USB‑IF channel – it’s lab‑internal scheduling – some labs don’t offer it – don’t budget for it.

  6. Cost‑Control Recommendations

6.1 Use Derivative for Multiple SKUs

Same platform, multiple SKUs – first SKU Full, subsequent qualifying ones Derivative. Derivative is far cheaper – 5 derivatives vs. 5 Full saves over 60% – easy maths.

6.2 Pre‑Testing Is Worth It

Pre‑testing before formal submission improves pass rates. If formal testing fails, retesting + re‑queuing costs far more than pre‑test investment.

6.3 Consider Domestic Labs First
