A common misconception among new entrants: Google charges no official fees for basic Android Auto Compatibility Certification. Google does not collect application fees or certificate fees. However, this does not mean the certification process is free of cost. We break down all expenses and explain why price quotes vary greatly between manufacturers.
Total costs mainly fall into three categories: third-party authorized laboratory testing fees, in-house R&D and pre-testing investment, and time costs caused by product complexity and revision rounds. All expenses are paid to testing organizations and technical teams rather than Google.
1.1 Laboratory Testing Fees (Largest Direct Expense)
Google authorizes multiple third-party (3PL) labs worldwide for AA compatibility tests with different pricing standards. Below is the industry price range for a single complete test round:
·Basic wired head units: If the USB protocol stack and HID interaction are stable with sufficient pre-tests, the single-round lab testing fee ranges from CNY 15,000 to 35,000.
Standard AA test framework covers 7 major modules: PCTS compatibility tests, Sensor Log verification, Qsuite functional interaction tests, VRRT voice routing & response performance evaluation, performance benchmark tests, Plugbot automated hot-swap stability tests and AOAP wired USB audio protocol compliance tests. Wired products require full AOAP tests, while wireless products skip AOAP but need complete Bluetooth and Wi-Fi link tests.
·Wireless projection products: With additional 5GHz Wi-Fi link and BLE handshake tests, test cases double. The single-round testing fee ranges from CNY 35,000 to 80,000, depending on Wi-Fi RF performance, BLE connection stability and mobile phone compatibility matrix.
If products integrate wireless charging modules, heat generated during charging may cause Wi-Fi disconnection — a frequent failure point in tests. This issue is evaluated during regular wireless link tests and does not incur extra charges.
Retest Rules
Most projects require 1 to 2 rounds of revisions and retests after the first test. Retests only run targeted failed items instead of all cases, and labs charge separately based on actual retest scope.
1.2 In-House R&D & Pre-Testing Costs
The PCTS self-test suite is provided free by Google, but a dedicated test environment is required: compliant host devices, multiple test mobile phones of different brands and Android versions, and qualified USB cables meeting Google specifications. The hardware investment for a basic self-test environment is around several thousand RMB.Labor costs are also considerable. A professional certification engineer needs substantial working hours to complete self-tests and coordinate lab tests, equivalent to tens of thousands of RMB in labor expenditure.
1.3 Total Cost by Product Type
·Wired-only aftermarket head units with mature chip solutions: Including one round of lab tests, partial retests, self-test environment and labor costs, the total expense ranges from CNY 40,000 to 90,000.
·Wireless-enabled products with full mobile compatibility matrix: Total cost ranges from CNY 80,000 to 180,000.
·Vehicle-grade factory-installed head units with multiple screens and multi-microphone arrays: With multiple retests and anechoic chamber pre-tests, the total budget often exceeds CNY 200,000.
All price ranges are industry references; actual costs fluctuate based on lab selection, revision rounds and product defects.
2. Impact of AA 2.0 on Certification Costs
·The new CER mechanism under 2.0 reduces repeated document preparation and review work for compliance exceptions, cutting internal labor hours for enterprises. CER itself has no official audit fees.
·Higher automation coverage in 2.0 shortens the overall test cycle, indirectly reducing time costs.
·Test cases in 2.0 are more complex than 1.0. Some labs have slightly raised single-round testing fees for 2.0 projects.
