The first half of 2026 has brought frequent updates to the in-vehicle certification industry, including new features announced at Google I/O, full rollout of the 2.0 certification system, new authorized laboratories and accelerated wireless adoption. Many past experiences are no longer applicable. This article covers the latest developments and their impacts on related businesses.
Android Auto received a major upgrade at Google I/O 2026. The most practical improvement is full-screen adaptive display, which automatically fits various irregular vehicle screens including ultra-wide and vertical screens, eliminating image stretching or cropping issues. This greatly reduces screen adaptation workload for hardware manufacturers.
Key New Features
·YouTube Video Streaming: Officially launched on Android Auto projection, supporting 60fps full HD playback. Video playback is only allowed when the vehicle is parked; the system automatically switches to pure audio mode when the car is in drive gear. The first batch covers 11 automotive brands. This update applies to mobile phone projection mode instead of native head unit systems.
·Dolby Atmos Spatial Audio: Enabled on Android Auto projection, initially supporting 8 brands: BMW, Genesis, Mahindra, Mercedes-Benz, Renault, Škoda, Tata Motors and Volvo. Ford is not included in the first batch.
·Gemini AI Assistant: Gemini Intelligence runs on mobile phones and extends to the Android Auto interface. The Magic Cue function provides intelligent reply suggestions and address recommendations for notifications, and supports voice commands for DoorDash orders. AA certification does not test the AI functions themselves, but only verifies audio channels and acoustic quality.
·Immersive Navigation: Google Maps supports edge-to-edge full-screen navigation with 3D buildings and elevated road networks in urban areas. Real-time lane-level guidance and traffic light recognition are exclusive to AAOS native systems, as these functions require access to vehicle front camera data which projection mode cannot obtain.
2. New Updates for AAOS (Android Automotive OS)
AAOS also launched new features at Google I/O, creating obvious experience gaps compared with AA projection: real-time lane guidance, Zoom video conferencing apps and HBO Max video streaming are all available on AAOS native head units. These functions are irrelevant to standard AA projection certification for aftermarket head units and modules.
3. Full Rollout of AA 2.0 Certification System
The 1.0 system was officially discontinued on January 9, 2026. Although Google has not issued a global public announcement, all authorized labs have adopted this deadline. Ongoing projects based on 1.0 must switch to the 2.0 process.
Practical Notes on Test Data
Functional test cases such as PCTS require full retesting under 2.0. However, underlying hardware test data for RF, USB and Bluetooth can be referenced and reused internally by laboratories.
Advantages & Disadvantages of AA 2.0
Advantages
·SSL certificates are issued earlier in the workflow, resolving the long waiting period in the 1.0 system.
·The standardized CER compliance exception mechanism simplifies reviews. Approved exemptions can be referenced by subsequent projects with the same hardware architecture and product form, avoiding repeated document submissions. Note that CERs need re-application if core hardware such as main control chips or wireless modules is replaced.
·Overall review procedures are streamlined with fewer cross-department dependencies.
Disadvantages
Test logics are more complex than 1.0. A new project grouping mechanism is introduced to avoid redundant tests, which requires extra time for teams to learn and apply.
4. Industry Trend: Accelerated Wireless Adoption
Wireless Android Auto was once an optional add-on, while Google is now promoting it as a standard configuration. The 2.0 system raises higher requirements for wireless tests:
·Enhanced evaluation for 5GHz Wi-Fi connection stability.
·BLE anti-interference and hot-switch reliability become hard assessment indicators.
·New test items for thermal management under wireless charging scenarios.
RF performance and anti-interference capability carry significantly higher weight in test reports.
Wi-Fi Band Rules (Unchanged)
Standard AA 2.0 projection certification still only mandates 2.4GHz and 5GHz Wi-Fi tests. 6GHz (Wi-Fi 6E) is exclusive to AAOS and next-generation solutions. Products declared as "Wired Only" during PPID application remain exempt from all wireless tests.
