2026 HDMI Certification Update|Clarifying HDMI 2.2 Specifications and Bandwidth Requirements

In June 2025, the HDMI Forum officially released the HDMI 2.2 specification – bringing major changes to the certification rules. For those in high‑definition displays, AR/VR terminals, and digital signage – this update is much larger than the HDMI 2.1 to 2.1a upgrade.

The most obvious change: bandwidth. 96 Gbps – up from HDMI 2.1's 48 Gbps – supporting uncompressed 12K@120Hz and compressed 16K@60Hz. The new Enhanced FRL fixed‑rate link is the core transport mechanism – maintaining backward compatibility with legacy TMDS signals. The new Ultra96 cables are designed for 96 Gbps – rolling out from Q3 2025.

However: not all new products in 2026 require HDMI 2.2 certification. The HDMI 2.1 certification channel remains open – the industry has a clear logic for classification. Whether a product falls under HDMI 2.2 or 2.1 depends on public specifications and enabled features.


1. HDMI 2.2 – Core Changes

1.1Bandwidth and resolution capability

96 Gbps delivers significant resolution improvements:

·Uncompressed full‑chroma: 8K@60 4:4:4, 4K@240 4:4:4 – with 10‑bit/12‑bit colour depth.

·With compression: 4K@480, 5K@240, 8K@240, 10K@120, 12K@120.

Enhanced FRL is the foundation for 48 Gbps+ transmission. To achieve full 96 Gbps uncompressed, Enhanced FRL is required – legacy TMDS cannot. This requires hardware support – firmware alone cannot enable it – chip selection and PCB differential‑trace layout must be re‑planned. Gaming and VR/AR devices have rapidly increasing bandwidth demands – FRL is designed for these applications.

1.2Ultra96 cables

Ultra96 HDMI cables are the only cables fully compatible with all HDMI 2.2 applications. Nominal bandwidth: 96 Gbps – with lower electromagnetic radiation – backward compatible with legacy HDMI devices – under the official Ultra High Speed cable certification system.

Ultra96 is a specification identifier – manufacturers use it to differentiate cable bandwidth capability (64 Gbps, 80 Gbps, or 96 Gbps). To achieve the cable's full capability, terminal devices must also support HDMI 2.2. Early Ultra High Speed cables are limited to 48 Gbps – cannot carry 96 Gbps. Cable certification specifications and packaging marking requirements were revised in January 2026.

1.3LIP – Latency Indication Protocol

HDMI 2.2 adds LIP – to improve audio‑video sync in multi‑stage signal chains – particularly useful for consoles with A/V receivers and soundbars.

LIP is an optional HDMI 2.2 feature – mainly for gaming monitors and professional commercial displays. If your product doesn't enable it – no corresponding tests. For A/V receivers and soundbars with long‑standing lip‑sync issues – evaluate whether to support LIP.


  2. Product Certification Path Classification

2.1Which path does your product take?

Not all new products require HDMI 2.2 certification. Classification follows public claimsnot chip capability.

·If marketing materials claim 96 Gbps Enhanced FRL, 12K/16K output, LIP, multi‑link dynamic HDR sync, etc. – HDMI 2.2 certification is required.

·Products using only ≤48 Gbps bandwidth – with no HDMI 2.2 features – can still use HDMI 2.1 certification.

·TV boxes, soundbars, ordinary monitors – can still apply for HDMI 2.1 in 2026.

·Existing HDMI 2.1 certified products – if hardware unchanged, Adopter membership active, and HDCP keys valid – certificates remain valid.

2.2 Dynamic HDR, VRR, and ALLM

·Dynamic HDR sync: corresponding tests required.

·VRR/ALLM: optional – if firmware completely disables them and no marketing claims – tests can be skipped.

Trap: if firmware retains VRR/ALLM code – even without marketing – many labs recommend cleaning it up to avoid review disputes. Before submission, fully disable functions you don't intend to market.

2.3USB‑C HDMI Alt Mode

Native HDMI Alt Mode is stuck at HDMI 1.4b – no updates since 2023. Most USB‑C peripherals claiming HDMI 2.1 use DP Alt Mode + bridge chips – tested against standard HDMI source specifications. DP compliance reports cannot substitute HDMI certification data. For USB‑C to HDMI adapters – don't use DP reports in place of HDMI materials.


  3. ATC Lab Resources

3.1Ultra96 testing scheduling

Domestic tier‑1 ATCs with full 96 Gbps capability – 1–2 weeks for test reports. Smaller ATCs often lack 96 Gbps hardware. Overseas labs: 3–4 weeks. Before choosing a lab, confirm they have HDMI 2.2 test qualification – check HDMI LA's official lab list.

For in‑vehicle devices requiring wide‑temperature testing (-40°C to 85°C) – labs with both 96 Gbps and automotive temperature capability are limited – add 1 week and separate temperature‑test fees.

3.2AEC‑Q100 vs. HDMI – boundary

AEC‑Q100 compliance is a supply‑chain requirement from OEMs/Tier‑1s – not an HDMI LA Test ID requirement. Temperature testing is a lab value‑added service – billed separately from base HDMI testing. Don't confuse the two – AEC‑Q100 is not an HDMI certification threshold.


  4. HDCP Version and HDMI Specification

4.1No mandatory HDCP version tie‑in

Upgrading to HDMI 2.2 does not force HDCP 2.3. Manufacturers can freely choose HDCP 2.2 or 2.3. Only terminals playing 4K/8K copyright content (Netflix, Disney+) require HDCP 2.3. Local media playback and gaming consoles can use HDCP 2.2 – reducing test items and controlling costs.

4.2HDMI chip reuse filing

Certified HDMI chips/IP cores do not automatically exempt end‑products – you must submit a formal chip reuse filing to HDMI LA. Materials: chip vendor's Adopter ID, chip Test ID, authorisation agreement, and full BOM.

After filing, some protocol‑layer testing can be reduced – but PHY, HDCP, and EDID tests are mandatory for all terminals – no exemption. If you change the HDMI main controller or PCB differential‑trace layout – the old Test ID is invalid – certification must restart.


  5. Practical Traps

5.1Multi‑SKU shared Test ID

Multiple SKUs with identical HDMI circuitry can share a Test ID. If some SKUs add features (VRR, eARC) – incremental testing is required. Don't assume all variants are automatically covered – new features trigger supplementary testing.

5.2Corporate entity changes

In cases of mergers or company name changes – submit entity change filing to HDMI LA promptly. Without filing, Adopter IDs and Test IDs become invalid – previously certified products are effectively uncertified. Penalties have been seen overseas – customs detention and royalty back‑payment.

5.3HDMI 2.1 transition planning

HDMI 2.1 remains open – products with ≤48 Gbps bandwidth can continue using 2.1 certification in 2026. If you plan to support HDMI 2.2 in future upgrades – hardware must reserve headroom for 96 Gbps Enhanced FRL. At the chip‑selection stage, confirm the vendor's FRL roadmap.


  6. Sample Preparation and Cost Reference

6.1Samples and documentation

·Source and sink samples: 2–3 units each – must be formal production versions – no engineering prototypes.

·Ultra96 cables: confirm they bear official certification marks – labs will verify.

·EDID files, locked firmware, and FRL‑mode debug tools – prepare in advance.

Product labels on samples must match certification application data – model, hardware version, HDMI port count. If the lab finds mismatches – samples are rejected – re‑queue.

6.2Costs

Three main components:

·Adopter annual fees.

·Test ID registration fees per product category.

·Lab test fees per test items.

Sources generally have more test items – higher costs than sinks. Shared Test IDs save registration fees – but new features add costs.

Budget for remediation retesting. 96 Gbps PHY tests have tight margins – PCB trace design or connector selection deviations can cause failures – retesting is charged separately. Overseas ATCs have longer lead times – cross‑border shipping and customs also add to the timeline.

6.3Common rejection reasons

·EDID files not fully listing supported resolutions.

·Firmware containing unclaimed feature modules.

·Using non‑certified cables.

These account for most rejections. Before submission, do a self‑check against the Adopter manual – saves significant rework time.

Product name and trademark information must match HDMI LA records. If the company has changed name – update HDMI LA records first – then arrange sample testing.
