EU 2015/758 establishes the legal framework for mandatory eCall systems in European vehicles. The certification process is rigorous and designed to ensure reliability during life-threatening situations.
1.Planning and preparationManufacturers prepare technical documentation, risk assessments, and system design files. This stage often takes 2–4 months.
2.Application and lab schedulingApplications are submitted to a notified body. High-demand labs can have waiting periods of several weeks.
3.Testing and evaluationVehicles and components undergo crash testing, environmental testing, EMC, communication, and positioning tests. Factory production quality is also inspected.
4.Final review and certificationAfter successful testing, documents are reviewed, and a type approval certificate is issued.
For well-prepared projects, the typical timeline is 6–9 months. In ideal conditions, it can be completed in about 5 months.
The biggest risks to timeline are testing failures and last-minute design changes. With the 2027 NG eCall mandate approaching, manufacturers must move to 4G/5G-based systems to avoid obsolete certifications.
