EU 2015/758 is the foundational EU law that requires eCall emergency call systems in most new vehicles. It clearly defines which vehicles are included and what tests must be passed to achieve certification.
·M1 vehicles: Passenger vehicles with up to nine seats — eCall is mandatory
·N1 vehicles: Light commercial vehicles up to 3.5 tonnes — increasingly required for full market access
The regulation applies to complete vehicles, but core components such as telematics modules (T-Box) can also be certified as separate technical units.
EU 2015/758 testing covers multiple performance areas:
·Crash and mechanical integrity testing
·Electrical safety and EMC performance
·Extreme temperature, humidity, vibration, and shock resistance
·Emergency call setup, audio quality, and data transmission
·GNSS positioning accuracy
·Cybersecurity and secure software management (for NG eCall)
Each test ensures the eCall system works when it matters most: during a serious accident.
As the EU transitions to NG eCall, additional testing for 4G/5G and IMS-based communication is now required. Manufacturers who plan ahead can avoid delays and extra costs.
