SNI is Indonesia's own national standard, and anything on the mandatory list cannot be sold locally without a certificate and mark. For plugs and sockets, do not rush to a lab — sort out who governs what first.
The standard is set by the National Standardization Agency (BSN). Mandatory implementation and the product list sit with the Ministry of Industry, certificates are issued by accredited product-certification bodies, and testing is done at laboratories accredited by the National Accreditation Committee (KAN). From 2025 the process moved into the Ministry of Industry's SIINAS system; filing is mostly online, with only a few bodies still accepting paper supplements, and customs certification data is already linked.
Household and similar plugs and sockets on the mandatory list generally meet the safety requirements of SNI IEC 60884-1:2014, while shape and dimensions follow the separate national standard SNI 04-3892.1.1-2003. The two numbers run in parallel, and the IEC family still shows 2014 and 2015 year editions — which year you test against changes the plan. Sockets with fuses follow SNI IEC 60884-2-1; switches are split out to SNI IEC 60669-1.
The grid is rated 230 V, 50 Hz — state that honestly on the nameplate. The pin form is the European two-round-pin, but 2.5 A and 16 A are not the same thing: the 2.5 A pin is 4 mm in diameter with a 19 mm pitch; the 16 A grade is thicker at 4.8 mm, and the earthed version must also account for the earth-clip position. Fail the gauge and the plug physically will not enter an Indonesian socket.
On electrical safety, insulation resistance, dielectric strength, earth continuity, leakage current and temperature rise are checked one by one. Temperature rise is the most stubborn — a slightly high contact resistance or weak heat dissipation and the reading climbs past limit under full load.
On mechanical and material sides, gauge check, insertion and withdrawal force, mechanical strength, heat and fire resistance, and rust resistance apply. Gauge and insertion force are the lifeblood of plugs and sockets: the gauge checks pin diameter, length and spread; insertion force checks how the plug seats and pulls. Lock the housing insulating material in at the development stage; switching it at submission drags the tooling cycle down with it.
Company qualification: business licence, company profile, org structure, quality-system certificate and manual, production process and inspection work instructions. Non-English originals get a translation attached; mismatched terms get bounced, costing weeks.
Product: specification, structure drawing, critical-parts list with supplier information, component certificates, manual, label and packaging artwork, factory information sheet. The manual must be in Indonesian; an English version is not a substitute. The exact file set follows the certification body's current checklist, and templates differ between bodies.
Confirm the product is on the mandatory list, then have the overseas manufacturer apply to a certification body through an Indonesian local representative. Samples go to an accredited lab; the cycle commonly runs four to eight weeks, longer for complex series models.
After testing comes document review and factory audit, the latter covering quality system, product consistency, process control and inspection-equipment calibration. Only when everything passes is the certificate issued, along with approval to use the SNI mark, after which marking and supervision audits follow.
I estimate the overall schedule at three to six months, on the premise that the sample passes first time and the files need no rework. The biggest variable for overseas factories is the audit step itself: the auditor travels to the production site and looks in person, not a remote file flip, so book the trip early — miss the peak season and you stall, with the applicant footing travel.
Temperature rise over limit and rough earthing lead the pack; pins that fail the gauge and materials that miss heat or fire resistance are also common. All of these should be solved at the design stage; handling them in the lab doubles the cost.
Nameplate and manual fail just as often: incomplete marks, a missing Indonesian version, packaging model mismatched against the application — all send you back.
Run the plug structure and materials through a pre-test first — gauge dimensions, temperature rise and fire resistance, the high-risk items — so the formal sample avoids a round trip.

The certificate has a fixed validity tied to the certification mode. Modes are tiered by product risk, from internal quality control to full-process control, with inspection tightness varying and supervision frequency following. File for renewal before expiry; before changing materials, supplier or structure, check first whether it counts as a change.
Mark placement, size and clarity are regulated; a micro product that cannot fit the mark on the body may simplify the body mark and supplement it on packaging and manual.
Whether a series of models can share one certificate depends on whether the electrical structure is identical. Same housing with different current ratings usually cannot be merged; ask before applying rather than forcing several models into one filing.
