In 2026, the USB PD3.1 old‑version grace period expired, and USB4 2.0 80Gbps testing is fully implemented – the process is now more detailed. This article covers the full practical path – from membership registration to TID and product listing.


一、Membership Registration and VID Application

Starting USB‑IF certification requires active membership. In 2026, there are two membership options – choose based on your product roadmap.

·Full member: USD 5,000/year – suitable for companies with ongoing USB product development. Benefits: free VID (Vendor ID) – reusable across multiple products – plus participation in USB standards discussions.

·Non‑member path: one‑time USD 6,000 for a VID – plus USD 3,500 for a 2‑year USB trademark licence – suitable for companies developing only 1–2 products. The licence must be renewed after 2 years.

Submit company details and product plans on the USB‑IF website – online review typically takes 1–2 weeks. Most common rejections: entity name mismatch with business licence, and use of personal email instead of corporate domain – avoiding these reduces revisions.

VID is a permanent manufacturer ID – valid long‑term. However, USB trademark usage rights are tied to membership/licence status – if membership lapses, you cannot print the mark on new products. One VID per company – subsidiaries may apply separately if they file products independently.


  二、Product Test Preparation

1. Confirm product category and test scope

USB‑IF certification is grouped by product type:

·Cables and connectors: data cables, Type‑C components.

·Power supplies: chargers, power banks, in‑vehicle chargers – focus on PD protocol compatibility, output stability, and protection mechanisms.

·Terminal devices: phones, computers, head units – with USB ports.

2026 new test requirements:

·Multi‑port chargers: power‑sharing testing – no power‑allocation anomalies when multiple ports are active.

·FRS (Fast Role Swap) devices: no power interruption during role switching.

Note: AVS (Adjustable Voltage Supply) is mandatory only for EPR 240W products – standard SPR fast‑charge devices ≤100W do not require it – don't add unnecessary development costs.

2. Choose the right lab

Testing must be performed at USB‑IF‑authorised ITL labs – e.g., GRL – reports from non‑authorised labs are not accepted. Before submitting, confirm the lab's test capability – avoid finding out later that they cannot run certain items.

Common misconception: ordinary ITLs can only do electrical testing – not interoperability. For most consumer products, authorised ITLs can handle full interoperability testing. After all tests pass, the lab submits the full report to USB‑IF for final review – taking 1–2 weeks. Upon approval, a unique TID is issued – USB‑IF does not issue paper certificates – customers can verify product status via the TID in the public database.

After obtaining the TID, submit a trademark licence application – upload product photos and USB mark artwork. Logo printing must strictly follow USB‑IF official guidelines – the rumoured "minimum mark height 3mm" is false – the specification does not set a hard millimetre minimum – the core requirements are completeness, clarity, and contrast. The mark must appear on the product body and outer packaging.

5. QbS similarity certification

Derivative models on the same platform can use QbS (Qualified by Similarity). If core hardware (authentication chip, cable internal structure, power supply) is unchanged – only colour, appearance, or minor interface changes – you can use this path. Test items can be reduced by up to 60% – significantly shorter timelines and lower costs. Changing only charger colour or cable length generally qualifies. Changing core circuits or E‑Marker chips disqualifies QbS.
