EU 2017/79 certification is entering a major transition period as the European Union moves from legacy 2G/3G-based eCall systems to Next Generation eCall (NG eCall) using 4G and 5G networks. The updated rules, published as (EU) 2025/1871, modernize technical requirements and ensure emergency call systems remain functional as older mobile infrastructure is retired.
One of the most significant changes is the shift from circuit-switched (CS) voice calls to IMS-based emergency calling over modern mobile networks. This improves reliability, call setup speed, and location accuracy. The regulation also introduces new testing requirements for backup power, system self-diagnostics, and long-term durability.
·January 1, 2026: Voluntary compliance with new NG eCall standards begins
·January 1, 2027: Mandatory compliance for all new type approvals
·January 1, 2028: Extended requirements for periodic vehicle inspections
These changes affect manufacturers, suppliers, and testing facilities across the automotive industry. Systems that do not transition to NG eCall will lose certification validity by 2027.
To navigate the transition smoothly and maintain market access in the EU, manufacturers must update their designs, testing plans, and documentation ahead of deadlines.
